Not really a huge jump from the Redmi 4X

Honestly, this phone doesn’t offer a huge upgrade over the old Xiaomi Redmi 4X. But at this price range, it is one of the must have midranger.

Built like a Flagship

With my experience on Xiaomi Smartphones, I’ve noticed that even their budget phones share a pleasant premium built, and that is true with the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus

18:9 Screen

This is perhaps the only obvious change from the old Xiaomi Redmi 4X. But it is a good upgrade, the screen offers much bigger screen space with no compromise on performance

The abused but reliable Snapdragon 625

The phone comes equipped with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip, so performance is relatively on par. Even though this is currently the most common chipset around, it delivers decent performance and great gaming experience.

No overheating issues

Another reason to get this phone is that, it runs cool with no signs of heating up even when used heavily or gaming.

Global ROM and Android 7

It runs the latest Miui version 9.2 Global Rom, which means that playstore is built in and it comes with only a few bloatwares. The ROM also supports multiple languages. Overall Performance is stable and fast.

Excellent connectivity

Dual Band Wireless performance is impressive with  stable speeds and long range. Bluetooth works well too

Fast and Reliable Fingerprint Scanner

The Rear Fingerprint Scanner is quick, with no delay in responses and is also accurate in recognition.

GPS

Despite contradictory statements on the GPS performance. It is accurate within 3 +/- accuracy. Also the GPS can be used for pin point navigation.

Same old Xiaomi Camera UI

Nothing new here people, if you own a Xiaomi Phone, chances are, it has the same features and shooting modes.

Impressive camera performance on good lighting

The camera performs well, HDR brings out the dynamic range of the photos and from my sample footage on the video above, the quality of the images look great

No IS or Image Stabilization

The 12 mp camera sensor can shoot 4K and 1080p @ 30fps but sadly no IS (Image Stabilization), which is expected for this price range anyway.

Front Camera with Soft light

The Front camera surprisingly  features a soft light, which is helpful in taking those selfies on low light.

Audio Quality from Microphones suck

Not only with this phone, but almost all Xiaomi phones that I ‘ve tested, the audio quality from their microphones doesn’t sound good.

14 hours Battery life

To be precise, according to PCMark 2.0, it was 14 hours and 37 minutes, which is an impressive feat for a mid-ranger

No USB Type C but has Quick Charger included

It’s already 2018 and still no USB Type C. Fortunately, it came with its own fast charger as consolation.

Buy or Not?

Of course, BUY. It offers a lot of advances than issues and most of those issues are quite subjective. Anyway, at this price, the phone delivers what it presents, a no fuss or no gimmick phone perfect for budget users.
