Snapdragon 636, the new Budget King Chip?
I won’t bore with all the details, so I will just share the most important details of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, which is set to be a mainstream chip, replacing the Snapdragon 625.
I would have loved that the Snapdragon 660 be a mainstream chip, it is too expensive and I think that is one of the reason why most phone manufacturers didn’t go through with it.
Major improvements of the Snapdragon 636:
- Markedly much faster performance (Antutu scores more than 100K points)
- Much Efficient when it comes to multitasking and better heat management
- Supports X12 LTE (up to 600Mbps download speed and 150Mbps Upload speed)
- Adreno 509 (much better performance on gaming)
- Supports Dual PD (Phase Detection) – removes delay in focusing
- Bluetooth 5.0
- Dual Band Wireless ac (WCN3980)
- Quick Charge 4 Supported
Cons:
- Slight decrease in battery life compared to the Snapdragon 625, but it isn’t that noticeable
- As of recent, phones with this chipset is still pricey ($200 plus)
Currently, phones that have this chipset
- Asus Zenfone 5 at $429 Use Coupon: GBAsus5
Snapdragon 636, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB
Dual Camera, 19:9 Screen - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 at $229
Snapdragon 636, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB eMMC
18:9 Screen (2160 x 1080p), Dual Rear Cameras
Will the Snapdragon 636 finally replace the Snapdragon 625?
Hopefully, it seems like a fitting upgrade to a reliable chipset. Don’t get me wrong, the Snapdragon 625 still is a capable chip, but you have to admit, it is already outdated. From experience, the new Snapdragon 636 performs a lot better especially on heavy use, multitasking and gaming.
For now, phones that have this is still quite pricey, but in the coming months, I think those prices will go down.
