Hi. I'm an MBA Student at the University of Minnesota. I'm a working professional, and a part time student. For one of my courses, I'm tasked with evaluating a new invention that may be introduced into the health care marketplace in 4-6 years. I'm not convinced that anyone would consider it, so I thought that I would reach out here to try to obtain something we call "voice of the customer."Essentially, this is a temporary monitoring device that would be placed in the mouth to monitor food volume and sugar intake. Sensors in the device read food activity, and communicate to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. It would be secured to the tongue via a piercing - similar to a tongue stud in size and weight. If the device senses the wearer has ingested too much sugar or too high of a volume of food, it will release a bitter tasting (but safe) chemical into the mouth. If the wearer continues, the device would provide an uncomfortable electrical stimulation to the tongue. The general idea is that the device could serve as a behavior modification device, and be a less-invasive alternative to gastric bypass surgery or other bariatric weight-loss surgeries. My question for the group is, if your doctor presented this to you as an option, as an alternative to surgery, would you even consider it? Or would it be an absolute yes or no?I appreciate your feedback, I wish nothing but the best to all of you in your journey. I'm a 44 year old white male, 6' tall, 273 pounds. Former athlete, and have struggled with my weight greatly since injuries and resultant surgeries forced me away from playing sports.
